Generation of Field‐Aligned Currents During Substorm Expansion: An Update

چکیده

We investigated generation processes of field-aligned currents (FACs) that are abruptly intensified at the beginning substorm expansion phase by tracing a packet Alfvén wave backward in time from onset position ionosphere global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation. The region is found near-Earth plasma sheet, which (a) azimuthally moving pulls magnetic field line, and performs negative work against tension force to excite waves, (b) FACs generated requirement Ampère Faraday laws, (c) field-perpendicular current converted FACs. call this FAC dynamo. involved originates tail lobe region. When reconnection occurs accelerated earthward Lorentz force, decelerated pressure gradient followed force. flow deflected west east directions resulting excitation waves propagate along rest frame plasma. it arrives ionosphere, auroral electrojet starts developing begins. dynamo can be distinguished (J · E < 0, where J density electric field). suggest evolution understood terms development

On storm weakening during substorm expansion phase

Iyemori and Rao recently presented evidence that the strength of a magnetic storm, as measured by -Dst, weakens, or its rate of growth slows, during the substorm expansion phase. Yet the expansion phase is known to inject energetic particles into the ring current, which should strengthen the storm. We propose to reconcile these apparently contradictory results by combining the virial theorem an...

Magnetotail energy dissipation during an auroral substorm

Violent releases of space plasma energy from the Earth's magnetotail during substorms produce strong electric currents and bright aurora. But what modulates these currents and aurora and controls dissipation of the energy released in the ionosphere? Using data from the THEMIS fleet of satellites and ground-based imagers and magnetometers, we show that plasma energy dissipation is controlled by ...

Magnetic dipolarization with substorm expansion onset

[1] We compare the timing and spatial extent of dipolarization with auroral breakup by using magnetic field data (1-min time resolution) from GOES 8 and GOES 9 and global auroral images (37-s frame rate) from the Polar ultraviolet imager. We survey the entire year of 1997 data and obtain 32 unambiguous dipolarization events that had ionospheric footprints within 2 hours in magnetic local time (...

The particle carriers of field-aligned currents in the Earth's magnetotail during a substorm

Although the particle carriers of field-aligned currents (FACs) in the Earth’s magnetotail play an important role in the transfer of momentum and energy between the solar wind, magnetosphere, and ionosphere, the characteristics of the FAC carriers have been poorly understood. Taking advantage of multiinstrument magnetic field and plasma data collected by the four spacecraft of the Cluster const...

Observations of GPS scintillation during an isolated auroral substorm

This paper reports simultaneous observations of ionospheric scintillation during an auroral substorm that were made using an all-sky full-color digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (ASC) and a Global Positioning System (GPS) ionospheric scintillation and total electron content monitor (GISTM) in Tromsø (69.60 N, 19.20 E), Norway. On the night of November 19, 2009, a small substorm occurred ...
